Colares (Sintra, Portugal), is one of the oldest demarcated regions in the country (1908), the most western of the European continent, and the smallest still wine producing region in Portugal.

Arenae Ramisco Tinto DOC Colares 2012 500 ml

  • Tasting NotesLight-ruby colour with medium intensity. The unique bouquet shows character of wild cherry in a balsamic cedar-resin backdrop. Clean fruit with an Atlantic character in the palate, reminding pine seed. Earthy dry texture with a mineral acidity. With ageing, the colour changes to an “onion-peel” tawny and the wine shows its full aromatic complexity.
  • Varieties and SoilsRamisco Ancient and rare grape sort, only grown in this area. Cultivated in the traditional phyloxera-free sandy soils without root stock grafting, located at less than 1km (0,62 miles) from the Atlantic Coast at an average altitude of 110m (360 feet).
  • Food PairingSuits well roasted meats (lamb), game, mushrooms and cheeses. The bottles should be handled carefully and opened some time before tasting. It is best appreciated at 18ºC.

  • Tasting NotesMedium yellow colour with light green reflections. The bouquet shows character of lemonand verbena with a unique and intriguing sensation of wax, honey and boiled apple. Strong presence in the palate, with good acidity, dryness and a unique mineral character (sallé), reminding the nearby sea. With ageing, the wine loses some of its fresh aromatic style but retains elements of delicacy, and the flavours become even more distinctive, with toasted notes of dried fruits, iodine and hay.
  • Varieties and SoilsMalvasia de Colares Ancient and rare grape sort, only grown in this area. Cultivated in the traditional phyloxera-free sandy soils without root stock grafting, located at less than 1 km (0,62 miles)from the Atlantic Coast at an average altitude of 110 m (360 feet).
  • Food PairingSuits a wide range of foods and can also be served as an aperitif. It particularly suits the aromatic flavours of Thai and Indian cuisine, grilled fish and shellfish. Great with oysters! As the wine ages, gaining a different patina, it serves well with more sophisticated and seasoned fish meals. Serve chilled (10ºC).

  • Tasting NotesDue to the vineyards specific microclimate, the alcohol content is relatively low and the colour of medium intensity. Red fruit bouquet with a discrete toast adding complexity tothe wine. Fruity mouth with a touch of oak and pine nut.
  • Varieties and SoilsCastelão (80%) e Tinta Roriz (20%) Traditional Portuguese varieties. “Chão Rijo” literally means “Hard Soil”. It ́s the local expression to identify the argilo-calcareous soils of the region. Located at less than 10 km (6,2 miles)from the Atlantic Coast at an average altitude of 110 m (360 feet).
  • Food PairingA versatile wine to enjoy with light meals, barbecue and cheese. Also very good with white meats, cream pastas and Chinese cuisine. Serve at 16-18 ºC.

  • Tasting NotesThe wine presents a soft yellow colour with light green reflections. The bouquet shows character of citric and tropical fruits. Strong presence in the palate with a unique mineral touch, reminding the nearby sea. Due to the vineyards specific microclimate, the alcohol content is relatively low.
  • Varieties and SoilsMalvasia (60%), Galego Dourado, Jampal e F. Pires Traditional Portuguese varieties. “Chão Rijo” literally means “Hard Soil”. It ́s the local expression to identify the argilo-calcareous soils of the region. Located at less than 10 km (6,2 miles)from the Atlantic Coast at an average altitude of 110 m (360 feet).
  • Food PairingSuits a wide range of foods and can also be served as an aperitif wine. It particularly suits the aromatic flavours of Thai and Indian cuisine, grilled fish, shellfish and salads. Serve at 10-12 ºC

  • Tasting NotesThe bouquet shows character of red fruit (berries). The taste reveals small hints of toast with smooth tannins. Long and pleasant finish.
  • Varieties, Soils and ClimateCastelão e T.Roriz Traditional Portuguese varieties planted on argilo-calcareous soils of the region. The climate is very specific, with a muscular Atlantic influence, i.e. moderate temperatures and high humidity.
  • Serving and Food PairingUnpretentious wine to be served in any occasion, especially with meats and pasta meals. Should be served at 16ºC-18ºC.

The queen of Colares red grape variety, giving rise to red wines of enormous complexity and with recognised ageing potential;

The white grape variety par excellence. Fresh, herbal, mineral and salty wines.

The traditional red grape variety from the “Chão Rijo” soil and common throughout the Lisbon region.
